Summary of Expertise:

Listed with other top experts in: |
A substantial portion of Expert's work involves the study of coronary arteries, both in vivo and using isolated artery segments. This work is directed toward measurement of responses of coronary arteries to drugs and biologically-active materials.
Expert has carried out numerous studies over many years using a variety of techniques for measurement of coronary blood flow. Techniques available include electromagnetic and ultrasonic coronary artery flow-meters, microspheres (both radioactive and colored), and first pass perfusion imaging using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology.
Expert's studies in this area have concentrated on coronary blood flow and mechanical performance of the heart during ischemia, stress, or in response to drugs. In addition, studies of cardiac energy are performed using 31P-NMR spectroscopy.
Expert has performed studies examining the responses of coronary blood flow to drugs. These studies have been important in understanding antiischemia mechanisms by which drugs improve coronary blood flow and myocardial performance.
Expert has performed studies examining the response of the heart to exercise or other stress, especially in the presence of occlusive coronary artery disease.
Expert has made a substantial effort in response to exercise or pharmacologic agents, as well as hyperemia which follows periods of ischemia (reactive hyperemis). These studies are directed toward understanding the mechanisms responsible for vasodilation which result in coronary hyperemia.
Expert has examined experimental interventions for reduction of myocardial infarct size following coronary artery occlusion. These studies have resulted in the development of experimental animal models for examining the effects of experimental intervention on myocardial infarct size and cardiac function.
Expert is experienced in the development of experimental animals for examining the effect of a coronary stenosis on myocardial blood flow. These models allow study of the effects of drugs and biologically-active materials on perfusion, and the contractile function of ischemic myocardium during exercise.
Expert has performed studies on developing experimental models of coronary artery stenosis and occlusion. Much of this work has been directed toward understanding blood flow to ischemic myocardium, and identifying drugs and biologically-active substances that improve myocardial blood flow and contractile performance. A large body of information has been collected characterizing the growth of new alternative blood vessels (collateral vessels) that can provide blood to heart tissue downstream from an obstructed coronary artery.
