BORON. He has directed the research of graduate and undergraduate students and postdoctoral associates in the synthesis, characterization, and studies of the chemical reactivity of new cage and cluster compounds involving boron. He and his students have pioneered the discovery and development of many novel compound types (e.g., stable multi-decker metal sandwich complexes, metal-rich metallaboron clusters, large carbon-rich carboranes), new reactions (metal-induced cage fusion), and techniques for determining the molecular structure of boron clusters (two dimensional boron-11 nuclear magnetic resonance).

Expert is a member of the American Chemical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Inorganic Syntheses Inc. (President 1997-2000), and the Alexander von Humboldt Association of America.

He is a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Virginia and is the President of Inorganic Syntheses Inc.

Expert won the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize in 1997. He was a Fulbright Senior Research Scholar and Visiting Professor at the University of Canterbury (New Zealand) in 1974. In 1986 he was a Guest Professor at the University of Heidelberg (Germany). He won the Boron U.S.A. (BUSA) Award for Distinguished Achievements in Boron Science in 1990 and is the recipient of the Sigma Xi President's and Visitors' Research Prize in the Natural Sciences and Mathematics from the University of Virginia in 1981, 1984, and 1996.
