Much of Expert's career has been involved with glass, especially with the development and processing of new glass compositions with specific properties, the conversion of glass to crystalline material to form glass-ceramics with the attendant change in properties, and the drawing of glass into fibers and their subsequent use as reinforcing material. He is also experienced in other areas of glass and ceramic technology, including glass and ceramic fibers, glasses for high temperature lubrication, the viscometry and surface tension of molten glasses, slags, and noncrystalline structures, electrical properties of glasses, and phase equilibria in ceramic systems.
A significant portion of Expert's career has involved the development of ceramic coating systems for corrosion protection of metals, and for electrical and thermal insulation. He has knowledge of glass powder coatings, and the electrical properties of glass coatings in general. He has performed research in high temperature coatings on copper wire for dielectric applications, protective coatings for refractory metals (tungsten and molybdenum), and crystallization kinetics in glasses. His research has also included the development of glasses for such diverse applications as electronics, catalytic coatings, and brazing fluxes. Expert has extensive experience in industry, where he has done innovative work in the areas of fiberglass, glass coatings for steel, and new product development. He has also served as a materials consultant.
Expert's experience includes the development of P/E coatings and coating systems for many special applications such as metal electrodes requiring low electrical dissipation factors, high dielectric constants, high volume resistivity, and corrosion protection in liquids and gases at room temperature and above.
