CATALYSIS; HETEROGENEOUS CATALYSTS. Expert has focused most of his research and consulting efforts on catalyst selection, evaluating performance (including deactivation), and troubleshooting operating catalytic reactors of all types. His special emphasis has been on heterogeneous catalysts for chemicals, specialty chemicals, petrochemicals, and refinery products. He has considerable experience in planning experiments for evaluating catalysts and obtaining valid kinetic data for use in design. He also has introduced a number of experimental and process innovations, including new catalysts, among the first encapsulated enzyme systems, and a redispersion technique for the ethylbenzene dehydrogenation catalyst. COMMERCIAL CATALYSTS AND CATALYTIC PROCESSES. Expert has done extensive research and consulting on hydrogenation, dehydrogenation, cracking, hydrotreating, hydrodesulfurization, and oxidation catalysts and processes. CHEMICAL REACTOR DESIGN; CHEMICAL REACTOR APPLICATIONS. Expert is familiar with all types of chemical reactors, especially those using solid (heterogenous) catalysts. He has extensive experience in design, operation, and troubleshooting, along with bench-scale and pilot-plant studies. He has worked both in industry (a design firm) and as a consultant in the design of reactors based on rate data obtained from bench scale and pilot-plant data or based on direct scale-up of pilot-plant data. REACTION RATE EQUATIONS; REACTOR MODELS; BATCH REACTOR; CONTINUOUS REACTOR. Expert is well-versed in the planning and execution of experimental programs for obtaining valid rate data, both by bench-scale and pilot-plant reactors. These studies were followed by the development of mathematical models for design and operation of batch reactors, plug-flow reactors, and continuous stirred-tank reactors.
