Expert is a member of several honor societies, including Tau Beta Phi, Omega Chi Epsilon, and Sigma Xi. He was elected Fellow of ASEE in 2002. From the ASEE in 1999, he received the Chester F. Carlson Award and was the co-recipient of the Joseph J. Martin Award. He also won the Middle Atlantic Meeting Best Paper Award, also from the ASEE. In 1998, he was the co-recipient of the Joseph J. Martin Award. The ASEE also awarded him with the following: George Westinghouse Award (1996), John Fluke Award (1992), DELOS Best Paper Award (1992), Dow Outstanding Faculty Award (1989), and the New Engineering Educator Excellence Award (1987). In 1986, the SAE awarded him with the Ralph R. Teetor Award.
