Summary of Expertise:
Listed with other top experts in: |
He has been broadly active in the ceramic and glass issues of glass-to-metal sealing, thick film processing, and ceramic packaging. He has most recently focused on low dielectric constant packaging materials, A1N-compatible thick film systems, and glass feed-through technologies. He teaches courses and offers short seminars on these topics.
He has had 30 years of industrial and university experience in all areas of glass. These include sheet, tubing, electronic, frit, glass-to-metal sealing, lamps, optical coatings, composition design, manufacture, and failure/fracture analysis. He has especially studied glass as the controlling minor phase in seals, thick film materials, high alumina ceramics, and sintering.
He has had broad applications experience with glass and ceramic metallization and coating techniques. These include ion plating, plasma spraying, sol-gel optical coatings, pyrolytic coatings, CVD, thick film, and resinate coatings. A view towards joining applications has accompanied most of this work. He also has had extensive experience with SnO2 and In2O3 coating technologies, including sol-gel deposition.
He has 20 years experience in glass-to-metal sealing and bonding. He has worked with thick film bonding to glasses and substrates.
He has worked for four years investigating thick film binding to aluminum nitride for substrate applications. He has some knowledge of aluminum nitride processing, sintering, and hot pressing.
He has 30 years of experience processing ceramics from porcelains to theoretical dense ceramic arc tubes as well as glass processing. He has been a professor for four years teaching ceramic processing and ceramic materials properties. These are very broad topics for which he has specific and broad experience. Some product types include electrical porcelains, aluminum oxide arc tubes, enamels, and lamp glasses.
With 15 years of development experience in ceramic-to-metal sealing, he has applied his knowledge to areas such as lamps and electrical packaging (aluminum oxide metallizations, aluminum bonding, and glass solder-sealing).
He developed and patented glass-ceramic line insulators, lightning arresters, and bushing compositions. He also developed glass-ceramic enamels and substrate compositions.
He managed and participated in research that developed sol-gel materials for a broad range of applications including optical coatings, ceramic powders (patent), and corrosion barriers.
He has had experience in materials selection, material failure analysis, sealing, and metallization of ceramic packages. These include aluminum oxide, aluminum nitride, metal packages, and green tapes. Currently, he is active in high thermal conductivity materials, AlN, diamond films, BeO, and low dielectric constant packaging.
Expert has over 10 years of experience and has published on the topic of transparent conductive thin films. He works almost exclusively with indium oxide or tin oxide and their mixtures (ITO coatings). The coating techniques he has used include sputtering and sol-gel. He is familiar with coatings for energy-efficient low emissivity windows.
He has conducted three major long-ranged technological forecasts (T.F.) of lamps, lighting, and E-beam welding. He has also conducted many limited forecasts, such as his recently published forecast of diamond film deposition rates. He points out that T.F. has been an invaluable tool for strategic planning, research investment, and feasibility assessment. Presently, he is assessing the replacement timeframe of GaAs for Si devices.
