He specializes in mechanical seals (or face seals) for pumps, compressors, and other turbo machines, and lip seals (or oil seals) for bearings and other applications, which are types of rotary seals. He has developed mathematical techniques and computer programs to analyze the behavior of and to design such seals. This work involves fluid dynamics, gas dynamics, and structural mechanics, and is applicable to both liquid seals and gas seals. He has also conducted experimental research and development work on seals. For example, he has developed an electronically-controlled mechanical seal, incorporating a microprocessor-based adaptive control system. Complementing his research work, he teaches courses in fluid mechanics and heat transfer, and is chair of his school's tribology research group.
