Expert has expertise in life support systems for humans in space. He has extensive experience in physico-chemical approaches to recycling water and oxygen in space, oxygen storage, and processing solid wastes. He is very knowledgeable of water vapor electrolysis for oxygen regeneration and humidity control, carbon dioxide electrolysis using a solid electrolyte to recover oxygen for respiration, reverse osmosis for water purification, wet oxidation and supercritical water oxidation for the destruction of dissolved or suspended organic matter in waste water, and superoxides and chlorates for storing oxygen for respiration in portable oxygen supply systems. He has developed composite and plasma polymerized membranes for water purification by reverse osmosis.

Expert has extensive experience in the synthesis and characterization of thin films prepared by plasma polymerization, and diamond and diamond-like thin films also prepared by a low pressure plasma process. He has used low-temperature plasmas or glow discharges to etch polymer films. Expert developed scratch and oxidation resistant coatings for plastics, and antireflection coatings for plastics and solar cells. He has also created coatings to protect infrared salt crystal windows from moisture and biofilm resistant coatings.
