Expert has extremely detailed knowledge of film and extrusion coating processes, particularly in cast film coextrusion and production of PVC an PE shrink films by the orientation process. He has worked with the largest cast coextrusion line in the world, which produces 200,000 lbs. of 1 mil film per day. His extrusion knowledge dates back to 1960 at Metal Box (UK), where the first OPP line was started up in 1963. He has worked specifically with extruded multilayer polyethylene and polypropylene films and their copolymers in conjunction with barrier resins and other polymers. He also worked extensively with nylon and fluorinated polymers at Honeywell (Allied).

While not as intimately detailed as cast film, Expert has highly detailed knowledge of blown film and sheets extrusion processes. He has spent considerable time developing food grade rigid PVC sheet, PET sheet, and barex sheet for meat packaging applications and PP/EVOH/PP for thermoformed containers for shelf-stable food. While at James River/Printpack, Expert gained secondary expertise in polymer film laminates, aluminum laminates, flexible packaging laminates, flexible packaging printing, laminating machinery, and bag manufacturing. James River/Printpack is the country's leading producer of printed laminations manufactured by extrusion lamination and adhesive lamination. Expert has been heavily involved in developing films for use in these materials and has a good working knowledge of the equipment and processes involved, dating back to ground-breaking work with Metal Box in the 1960s.

Consulting Services:
Selected Consulting Examples:
  • Expert has visited many customers who have experienced problems in converting his company's packaging film. He has shown them how to increase machine speeds and efficiencies through correct film selection, adjustment of temperature profiles, and selection of correct design of sealing jaws. A specific example would be increasing production speeds at Pillsbury's Pie Crust packaging by 100% through modification of the heat seal layer resin and improved temperature control on their heaters.
  • He resolved an edge curl problem on PVC shrink tubing that was affecting dry cell battery production by changing the tubing manufacturing method. Tubing was being shock cooled in a cold water bath, resulting in external stresses in wall of tube. The die was modified to accept internal cooling mandrel.
  • Metallocene sealant layers were causing severe slip-stick problems on VFFS machines packaging precut salad, although ASTM tests showed Film-steel COF was 0.2. Found at higher sled loadings, COF was 0.5, so they increased slip levels, but also changed the antiblock type to one with some larger particles and less slip absorbent.
  • Expert has conducted many audits of polymer production facilities (e.g., Chevron, Amoco, Montel, DuPont, Exxon, etc.) to determine suitability for use. In doing so, he became familiar with polymer manufacturing methods and was able to delineate suppliers.
