slot antenna expert |
With over 40 years of experience in antenna and microwave design, Expert has performed numerous diagnostic near-field antenna pattern measurements. By means of an FFT or matrix-inversion algorithm, he has ascertained the aperture phase and amplitude coefficients. Armed with this knowledge, Expert can then discover the causes of pattern degradation. In addition, he has performed many studies of malfunctioning antennas to pinpoint problem areas, such as mutual coupling, surface waves, electrical conductivity, structural scattering, and radome reflections and refractions. Expert applied these techniques to production debugging of the Joint-STARS phased array and the SPS-67 slotted array antenna.Expert patented an in-flight diagnostic (and calibration) technique using signal injection to each radiator together with the FFT or matrix-inversion algorithm, which allows the restoration of low-sidelobe antenna patterns without system shut-down. This technique has been presented at the 20th European Microwave Conference and the 1985 Symposium on Phased Arrays.

antenna analysis expert |
Expert developed a host of computer programs for either principle plane or hemispherical antenna pattern generation and antenna gain calculation with both tabular and graphic data outputs. These programs can be applied to planar as well as non-planar arrays of equally- and unequally-spaced radiators and with equal- as well as unequal-polarizations. Any arbitrary radiator voltage magnitude and phase may be applied to these programs. In addition, random phase or amplitude tolerance errors may be injected. |
multiple-beam antenna array expert |
Expert has designed, built, tested, and analyzed numerous array antennas, using slot, dipole, spiral, or end-fire radiators of the Yagi variety. He has extensive experience with the Joint-STARS phased array, the APG-76 slotted array, and the SPS-67 traveling wave array. He is familiar with the switchable array of end-fire radiators for the Apollo spacecraft TV antenna, the frequency surveillance interlaced antenna array for Patrick AFB, and the frequency scanned slotted arrays for missile nose cones as well as developmental mortar locators. |
phased-array radar expert |
As the technical design leader, Expert directed a team of 22 engineers on the development of the Joint-STARS phased array antenna system. He holds patents on the ultra-low sidelobe asymmetric ridge wave slotted array aperture, the dualmode feed for switching between two aperture illuminations, and the in-flight diagnostic and phase alignment technique. He had responsibility for rotary joint, corporate feeds, ferrite phase shifters, mechanical configuration, tolerance control, beam-steering algorithm, L.O. distribution system, low-noise dual down-converter assembly, and IF switching. He performed detailed microwave and antenna design as well as supervision of all major microwave component and sub-assembly sub-contractors. He was also the technical design leader for the mortar locator phased-array antenna, which incorporated frequency as well as ferrite phase shifter scanning. He designed and developed the ferrite phase shifter, corporate feed, and slotted array frequency-scanning aperture. |
microwave antenna expert |
Expert designed, built, tested, and analyzed numerous antennas. For example, he can answer questions related to feed and reflectors, horns, slotted arrays, dielectric lens, end-fire radiators, log-periodic dipole arrays, low-profile monopole arrays, covert antennas, frequency-scanned arrays, and ferrite steered, self-calibrating, phased arrays (for radar communications) and ECM applications (for ground-based, air-borne and missile installations). He generated a computer program library for rapid antenna design, analysis, and debugging.
radome expert |
Expert designed A-sandwich, C-sandwich, many-layer radomes, and multi-layer radar windows for ground-based, airborne, and missile-borne radars and ECM systems for both narrow-band and multi-octave applications. Examples include the Joint-STARS, Standard-ARM, and AN/USQ-60 Polarimeter systems. He performed design optimizations over wide ranges of incidence angles, frequencies, and polarizations. He is familiar with the effects of rain erosion and heating during super-sonic flight. He has examined sled-test results. Expert has performed computer modeling of radomes with many layers of diverse dielectric constants and loss tangents, which included the effects of honeycomb and adhesive layers. He has experimented with Brewster angle-assisted end-fire designs and with the integration of beam shaping lenses. |
