As a result of competing in over 100 post-war road races, Expert turned his attention to handling characteristics of automobiles. He went on to transfer aircraft dynamic testing techniques to automotive testing. Under the sponsorship of General Motors, this program continued for 10 years and led to the formation of the Vehicle Dynamics Department at Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory (CAL). During this program the fundamental linear equations of the automobile and their experimental substantiation was accomplished. Expert has experience working with four wheel steering systems. He also studied motorcycles, bicycles, ships, hydrofoil boats, rapid transit, track-tread, and other vehicles. AERODYNAMICS; WIND TUNNEL; FLIGHT CONTROL SYSTEM; CONTROL ELECTRONICS SCIENCE. After graduating from MIT in 1934, Expert worked in the aircraft industry for 20 years in analysis, wind tunnel and flight testing, with an emphasis on stability and control. He was assistant head of Flight Test at Boeing Aircraft during WW II and was on the first flights of the prototype XB-29 and several B-17 models. As head of Flight Research at CAL, he initiated a program for measuring aircraft dynamics in flight using automatic control techniques, accomplishing the first frequency response measurements. He was co-inventor of the variable stability aircraft and involved in pioneering stability augmentation and modern electrohydraulic flight control systems. TIRES. The necessity for tire data led to the development of the first 6-component on-road tire tester and later TIRF, the original high-speed, flat-belt tire tester. This work was reported in the now classic papers presented at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in London in 1956. Expert later was involved with pioneering work in flat belt technology and high speed indoor testing. The testing machine he developed incorporated large slip and camber variations under both driving and braking torque conditions and controlled water film depth (as well as dry).
