Dr. (or Professor) Expert has made it a primary theme of his academic and industrial research to study how to take a novel idea from the lab bench to the pilot plant. The steps include conception, deciding what experimental data are required for proof-of-concept, comparing the concept to existing technology, and synthesizing a flowsheet that embodies the primary concept (or concepts) in a form sufficiently close to optimal to allow a preliminary economic evaluation. In recent years such projects have included small-scale production of chlorine and sodium hydroxide, sulfur recovery by four separate processes, and recovery of inorganic salts from aqueous solutions by extractive crystallization.

Expert has done research in the area of chlorine and chlorate cell development. He also served for 25 years as a divisional editor for the Journal of the Electrochemical Society. He is familiar with many aspects of industrial electrochemistry and the production of various bleaching chemicals in particular, and with the technology of producing many inorganic commodity chemicals in general.

Research and teaching of plant design have made Expert familiar with a wide variety of sulfur-recovery processes. He understands sulfuric acid manufacture, flue gas desulfurization, and the treatment of sour refinery gases. His research in high-temperature coal gas clean-up has included energy integration for improving the thermal efficiency of power production using gas turbines fired with that fuel.

Expert has done research in the stripping of organic solvents from water using steam under vacuum or air, together with the synthesis of low-energy processes for separating azeotrope-formers such as ethanol from water, both by extractive distillation and by azeotropic distillation. This work has made him familiar with the fundamentals that must be applied in many related separations.
