CHEMICAL REACTION ENGINEERING; CHEMICAL REACTION MECHANISM; REACTION THERMODYNAMICS. Expert has successfully developed a variety of engineering models and solutions for complex reacting systems combining heat transfer, fluid mechanics, and chemical kinetics. This work has included the chemical erosion of graphite rocket nozzles with film cooling, liquid drop vaporization combustion in rocket engines, NOx formation in utility boilers and industrial furnaces, and NOx formation in droplet combustion. CATALYTIC REFORMING. Expert has operated pilot plants for catalytic reforming using platinum on alumina catalysts in the petroleum industry, and he developed process correlations for the pilot plant results. He has also directed research in the development of a combustion catalyst injection system for emission reduction and performance improvement in diesel engines. BIOMASS ENERGY SYSTEM; BIOMASS FUEL; BIOMASS-FIRED BOILER. Expert has spent a number of years developing a biomass-fueled transportable power plant (cogeneration system) using a fluid-bed combustor and radiative and convective heat exchangers to indirectly heat and power a combustion turbine/generator. Besides all of the intricacies of the engineering (heat transfer, material selection, system optimization, etc.), the program included accumulating and applying an extensive knowledge of biomass fuels and the effects of their chemical composition on combustion and related processes such as gasification and liquification. FURNACE AIR EMISSION; NOx EMISSION REDUCTION. A significant portion of Expert's experience has involved applying combustion and chemical technologies to reducing emissions from utility power plants and industrial furnaces. He worked on teams of experts to assist companies in modifying operations of their existing furnaces using techniques such as "burners out of service," two-stage combustion," coal and gas co-firing," and "water injection." COMBUSTION SYSTEM POLLUTION CONTROL; FUEL OIL COMBUSTION. Throughout his career, Expert has worked with the clean combustion of fuel oils and other liquid fuels. His activities included organizing and conducting annual workshops on fuel oil use in the electrical utility industry for the Electrical Power Research Institute (EPRI). He served as Editor of EPRI's Fuel Oil Users Newsletter. RADIANT HEAT TRANSFER. In his doctoral research, Expert measured and correlated the rate of transfer of diffuse infrared radiation through clouds of absorbing scattering particles. LANDFILL GAS RECOVERY; METHANE FUEL. As the general manager of his consulting engineering firm, Expert participated in the design and engineering for a successful 50 MW power plant using landfill gas as a fuel to generate steam for powering a steam turbine electric generator. INCINERATION SYSTEM. Expert is knowledgeable of combustion technologies to reduce waste materials to minimum volume and mass for eventual disposal. He served as an expert witness in two crematory cases and worked with municipalities on solid waste power production issues. DIESEL EMISSIONS. Expert has spent several years assisting in the development of systems to reduce emissions from heavy duty diesel engines.
