AIR SEPARATION; GAS SEPARATION. Expert has developed several different separation processes for air and other gases. These include oxygen separation from air by pressure swing adsorption on molecular sieves (patented), thermal swing absorption on solid "hemoglobin" (patented), and diffusion through hollow fiber membranes. In addition, he has obtained basic data on co-adsorption of CO2, O2, N2, and water on molecular sieves and used this data to design efficient carbon dioxide removal systems. OZONE DESTRUCTION. Expert has developed a highly-effective catalytic ozone converter for removing ozone from the air entering aircraft cabins. The unit, now in production, combines lightweight materials, a unique catalyst, and a substrate with an efficient low-pressure drop design (patented). CATALYTIC CHEMICAL AGENT DESTRUCTION. Expert has led several projects to develop a substrate and catalyst system to catalytically destroy chemical agents at low temperatures and high space velocities. High efficiency and resistance to catalyst poisons were verified by live agent tests at an independent surety laboratory. AIRCRAFT CABIN AIR QUALITY. A significant portion of Expert's career has been devoted to improving the quality of air in the passenger compartments of commercial aircraft. He has been involved in aircraft air conditioning system design, ozone converter design, and engine bleed air contamination evaluation and removal. AIRCRAFT AIR CONDITIONING. Expert managed projects that used hot pressurized bleed air for cooling/heating, pressurization, and humidity control. The system approach uses heat exchangers and high-speed turbomachinery for environmental control.
