Expert has devoted his career to research and teaching in the areas of friction, lubrication, and wear since 1961. He adds that these subjects have been collectively known as tribology for the past 25 years. His interests cover a wide range of tribology subjects. These include high pressure lubricant rheology, wear control, tribomaterial evaluation, concentrated contact lubrication (elastohydrodynamic lubrication), thermal effects in tribology, the economic impact of tribology, and the assessment of advertising claims in relationship to product performance. He has had considerable experience in tribosimulation, which he explains is the laboratory simulation of a tribosystem to diagnose problems or to predict performance. Expert's research also has been concerned with ceramic tribomaterials and the lubrication of them. He has been especially interested in their behavior at high temperatures and the rheology of lubricants at high pressures. He collaborates extensively with scientists and engineers in other fields on problems in tribology. Expert directs research funded by government and industry in his field of expertise, and consults in industry and government, and on legal cases. He is also very knowledgeable in areas of rheological measurements of liquids (especially at high pressure), tribological behavior of materials and systems, infrared measurement of temperatures, and thin films. He has also expanded his activities to diagnostics of mechanical systems.

A significant portion of Expert's research career has been dedicated to the study of wear and wear control. This has included both lubricated and unlubricated wear, wear in the presence of solid lubricants, and wear of solid polymers or metals. In recent years, much of his research has been devoted to understanding the mechanism of thermomechanical wear. This phenomenon occurs when the combined surface stress and the temperature elevation resulting from frictional heating cause the mechanical properties of the surface to degrade and allow the material to yield. In 1980, Expert co-edited the ASME Wear Control Handbook with Marshall Peterson. It contains over 1300 pages with contributions by over 30 authors and gives extensive information on wear in engineering systems.

Expert defines a lubricant as a material (liquid, solid, or gas) introduced between two surfaces moving in relative motion to reduce friction and wear. His interest in lubrication stems from its role as a major mechanism of wear control. Much of his career has been devoted to understanding the many mechanisms of lubrication and the behavior of lubricants. Expert has had considerable experience in the development of laboratory systems to simulate tribosystems in machinery. Through careful laboratory system development, the larger scale system, such as that of the 12-inch diameter journal bearing in a 70 megawatt gas turbine, can be studied in the laboratory and predictive field performance information can be generated.

Expert defines rheology as the study of the flow and deformation behavior of materials. He notes that lubricants are subjected to the very high strain rates of more than a million reciprocal seconds. He adds that in concentrated contacts, such as gears and rolling element bearings, very high pressures are generated which range from 100 to 300 thousand pounds per square inch. The object of Expert's research for nearly 3 decades has been the measurement of viscosity and the limiting shear stress of lubricants under these conditions. He has measured viscosity pressure behavior of a large number of lubricants, as well as their limiting shear stresses. He has also studied the relationship between these rheological properties and the chemical composition of lubricants.

Expert notes that the resistance to relative motion is often referred to as friction. However, in situations where that resistance is to be maximized it is also referred to as traction. He has extensively studied the friction/traction in concentrated contacts. These occur in cams, gears, and rolling bearings where the resistance is often a function of the rheological properties of the lubricant (the limiting shear stress). He has also studied the friction/traction in other systems, such as brakes and clutches, in his laboratory.

Expert is a Fellow of the ASME and a recipient of the ASME Melville Award (1975), the ASME Mayo D. Hersey Award (1986), and the ASME Charles Russ Richards Memorial Award. He has also received the NLGI Clarence E. Earl Award (1979) and the Sigma Xi Award for Sustained Research (1975). He was named Faculty Member of the Year (1986) by the Expert's Firm Graduate Student Government.
