COMPLIANT MECHANISM DESIGN. Expert has focused his research in the past four years on compliant mechanisms. By combining kinematics and continuum mechanisms, he has developed a novel synthesis (design) technique for compliant mechanisms. Expert believes many problems related to design for deformation can be solved using this technique. His research has also resulted in new single-piece compliant products. MICROELECTROMECHANICS. Expert's current research projects deal with interesting issues related to modeling of multi-energy domain interactions that occur in microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). He has extensive experience with microelectromechanics and the dynamics of microsensors and microsystems. The development of CAD tools for designing MEMS is a significant, ongoing interest. MECHANICAL DEVICE DESIGN; KINEMATICS. Expert is well versed in the design of mechanisms for function, path, and motion generation tasks. He has experience in planar as well as spatial mechanisms. His past research resulted in a novel kind of indexing mechanism in which the cam is the output member. He continues to work in the area of kinematic design with a focus on conceptual design. MICROMECHANICAL SYSTEM; MICROROBOTICS. Expert's current work in actuated micromechanisms deals primarily with design, and to a limited extent, fabrication. He is interested in electrostatically- or thermally-driven micromechanical structures that can be optimized to move in a prescribed manner. Thus, he has learned it is possible to use these structures for mechanical manipulation tasks at micro level. He has fabricated grippers, crimpers, clamps, latches, and other devices all at the micro level. With regard to design, Expert has worked with the shape synthesis of micro devices and the static and dynamic analyses of electromechanical microsystems.

Expert has worked on a unique cam operated mechanism in which cam is the out member and the rolloer-crank is the input member. This arrangement enables many more possibilities than the conventional cam/roller-follower arrangement. They include full 360 degree rotation of cam and roller-crank in each cycle, multiple dwells, hesitation motion, etc. It can also be designed for good transmission characteristics.

Expert's current research projects include the development of electro-thermal micro-actuators, bulk silicon micromachining, and excimer laser micromachining.

|
Expert has extensive background in kinematics and dynamics of mechanism design. His past research work includes: rack and pinion mechanism, spatial RSCR mechanism, cam-follower mechanism, compliant mechanisms, and single degree of freedom coupled serial chain mechanisms for automation.
