For the past 15 years, the expert has worked extensively on developing new discharge light sources, principally low wattage, short arc gap, and high brightness metal halide lamps, as well as xenon and xenon metal halide lamps. Having numerous patents on lamp design, processes, and equipment, his knowledge includes both theory and actual fabrication of lamps and lamp making equipment.
He is one of the inventors of the xenon metal halide lamp that features instant light and re-light in contrast with ordinary metal halide lamps. The lamp is currently being used in the headlamps of some BMW cars.
He invented the equipment for carrying out a flush process for making low-wattage double-ended HID lamps.
Having done extensive theoretical and experimental studies of the failure mechanisms of incandescent lamps, he has developed new processes to improve the quality of tungsten filament wire and means to improve the perfection of the coiling process. He invented and developed the filament tube process and equipment for making the first practical halogen IR lamps.
The expert is one of the inventors of the reflector version of the xenon metal halide lamps. The lamp features a very short arc gap and very high pressure, making it an ideal source for introducing light into fiber optics.
He has broad experience and many patents in novel fiber-optic lighting systems. Applications in this area range from lighting a 25' diameter clock to jewelry cases, automotive headlamp systems, and large, high-brightness video screens.
The expert founded the Lighting Innovations Institute at Expert's University. The company's purpose is to further the research and development of lighting technology in product designs. The company believes that R & D can be carried out in a university setting with faster results and lower cost than in a large Industrial Laboratory. State of the art lighting systems have been developed using fiber optics and LEDs for various induistries and for the FAA. The staff at Lighting Innovations has design and implementation experience in the use of fibers, plastic molded optics, special-use collimators, and unique lens and/or lens system designs.
He has developed methods for obtaining uniform screen brightness in various types of projection systems. The use of short gap metal halide lamps makes possible projection screens of sufficient brightness for viewing in full sunlight.
A vital resource in developing new light sources is the ability to make accurate measurements of all attributes of the generated light. With 43 years' experience in the lighting business, the expert has purchased, developed, and used equipment to do these type of measurements. He also developed new light sources and the processes and equipment to make them.
The expert has broad experience using lasers for measuring the size of wire and glass tubing, nondestructive gas pressure in lamps, welding of lamp lead wires, holography, etc. He has developed HeNe laser devices to measure tungsten wire diameter, coil uniformity, tubing diameter, and gas pressure in lamps. He made holograms for part uniformity measurements. Additionally, he has worked with CO2 laser sealing of quartz lamps and YAG:ND laser welding of three-piece lamp leads.
Working extensively with several major automotive companies, he developed concepts for new types of vehicle lighting systems. These systems include discharge headlamps, both reflector and projection headlamps, fiber optic headlamps, and whole car systems using discharge sources and halogen and HIR incandescent sources. Over the past six years, he provided all these types of lighting for concept cars shown in auto shows. He also has numerous patents in the area of applied optics.
For the past six years, the expert has worked on developing new high-intensity light sources designed specifically for fiber optic illumination systems. He has worked closely with major manufacturers of large core optical fiber. Additionally, he has developed numerous applications including the relighting of a 25' diameter clock, automotive headlamp and whole car lighting systems, lighting of jewelry cases, replacing neon in outdoor signs, and providing fiber optic illumination of stadium-size video screens.
