Summary of Expertise:

Expert has more than 35 years of experience working with scientists, engineers, and managers in the design of multifactor experiments. Although much of his experience is concentrated in R&D, he is frequently called upon for help with experiments in full-scale production equipment. He has extensive experience with all forms of designed experiments, including factorials, fractional factorials, central composite designs, Latin squares, screening designs, mixture experiments, response surface methods, and nested designs. Expert applies these methods in diverse industries, including chemicals, plastics, catalysts, electronic components, medical devices, ceramics, and metals.
Expert's experience in analyzing multifactor data parallels his practice of designing experiments. The methods he uses most frequently include analysis of variance, the Student's T statistic, and fitting models to data.
As the manager of an applied statistics group at a major corporation,
Expert has innovated new methods for modeling chemical processes, including methods for building
models from unsteady-state data. He is familiar with methods of principal components and other
methods for analyzing "messy" data. He also is familiar with chemometric methods, notably methods
for predicting properties from limited amounts of data. Expert routinely teaches courses in DOE and
the analysis of data from designed experiments.
Expert uses designed experiments and other techniques to optimize formulations, products, and processes. He uses optimization experiments, mixture experiments, sequential-simplex optimization, evolutionary operation, and predictive systems. Expert teaches clients how they can bring products to market by using designed experiments, the analysis of multifactor data, optimization methods, and computer software to design products with a computer instead of running more
experiments in the lab. He has been able to reduce the number of products necessary to meet
market demand and meet customer requirements while minimizing the cost of materials. Expert has
applied these methods to formulations and mixtures, catalyst systems, metals, polymers, carbon
products, ceramics, and more.
Expert has worked with clients in diverse industries, including chemicals, rubber, plastics, electronic components, ceramics, food products, clay products, coatings, plating, medical devices, and others. His training and experience in a combination of chemical engineering and statistics gives him unique insight into physical and chemical systems.
Expert recently wrote software to simulate the energy system in a major chemical plant. Using Monte Carlo methods, he was able to predict a route to $5 million in cost avoidances. He also worked with a supplier-customer team to demonstrate how variables in the supplier process impacted the quality of
a product made by the customers.
Well versed in modern methods of SPC, Expert's activities include finding sources of variation and minimizing variation in products. He is familiar with process capability studies, the process capability index, and all of the usual control-charting methods, including cumulative sum charts. Expert also has extensive knowledge of the new methods for interpreting attribute data. He routinely teaches SPC courses for his clients. He is trained in and teaches "Six-Sigma" methods.
Expert is currently conducting private research in how genetic algorithms can be used to quickly move up a learning curve, especially in systems that have many active variables, typical of catalysts, certain formulations or mixtures, and complex processes. His idea is to partially optimize a system of variables before running a formal designed experiment.
A great deal of the data Expert finds in his practice does not meet the usual textbook assumptions. Because of this, he has developed resampling methods that allow him to move forward without restrictive assumptions. For example, he used a resampling method while serving as an expert witness in a lawsuit over the validity of a patent. This allowed him to demonstrate to the opposition the error in their complex statistical arguments.
Expert understands that the questions "How much data do we need?" is a critical issue in planning experiments. The failure to get enough data is a primary cause of failures with designed experiments. Expert has extensive knowledge of this concept.

| Selected Consulting Examples: |
-
Expert has extensive experience working with teams of scientists and engineers in planning experiments, analyzing data, and optimizing products and processes. In one recent instance, he worked with a team of chemists to create a new adhesive system and brought it to market in less that six weeks instead of the expected two years.
-
Expert was recently asked to serve as an expert witness in a major lawsuit concerned with the validity of a patent. He wrote his expert opinion, gave depositions, educated the attorneys in the interpretation of statistical terms, and successfully opposed the statistical expert who had claimed the patent was invalid.
-
Expert worked with a team of chemists and engineers to locate sources of variation in a critical polymer product.
-
Expert recently worked with a team of ceramic engineers, chemists, and physicists to design an innovative electronic capacitor. This involved running a series of complex designed experiments; building predictive models from the entire accumulation of data; and then using those models to learn how to design optimal products without further experimentation.
-
Expert worked with a team of engineers and operators to improve control charting techniques. The existing charts were too complex; the improved charts are appealing and are actually better for detecting changes in the process.
