He developed a new analysis of the corrosion behavior of coupled dissimilar metals and developed an experimental technique which allows quantitative measurements of the dissolution rate of galvanic couples.

Expert devised an electrochemical sensor for the hydrogen content in steel and has used acoustic emission for corrosion monitoring. An electrochemical sensor (the atmospheric corrosion monitor) has been developed to monitor the time-of-wetness in atmospheric corrosion studies.

Expert is one of the pioneers of the electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) technique which has been applied in the evaluation of the mechanisms of corrosion inhibition by organic and inorganic compounds. At present, EIS is used in an evaluation of methods of corrosion protection of metal matrix composites. Additional applications include the study of the corrosion behavior of structural materials in nonaqueous media and in low conductivity media, where traditional DC techniques fail.

Expert is an authority on corrosion protection by polymer coatings, conversion coatings, and anodized layers.

Expert has developed the atmospheric corrosion rate monitor (ACRM) for the study of the effects of pollutants and acid rain on the corrosion behavior of structural materials.

Most recently, Expert has initiated a research project in the area of corrosion protection by surface modification. He has developed a patented process for surface modification of aluminum alloys which does not use hazardous hexavalent chromium.

Expert has evaluated MIC of several stainless steels, copper alloys, and titanium in seawater and has published reviews concerning the use of electrochemical techniques for the study of MIC.
