Expertise Description: |
interferometer expert
interferometry expert |
Expert has applied laser interferometry to measure displacements eleven orders of magnitude smaller than the wavelength of light. Small displacement measurement by interferometric means is used to establish a new type of astrophysical observatory based on detecting gravitational waves. Expert is familiar with various interferometric techniques and layouts including heterodyne interferometry; applications of interferometry to subnanometer class displacement measurement; signal extraction; interferometer noise analysis and design for low noise (a.k.a. high resolution); and noise measurement and analysis in various measurement arrangements. |
argon laser expert
heterodyne expert |
Expert applies laser heterodyne techniques to measure displacements ten orders of magnitude smaller than the wavelength of light. The laser heterodyne displacement sensor was used to check Newton's Second Law for small accelerations. |
laser light frequency noise expert
laser light frequency stability expert |
Expert has designed and managed implementation of a servo and optical system to stabilize an argon ion laser to rigid reference resonator. The laser is being used for high precision interferometry.
feedback control system expert |
Expert designed and implemented a system to sense and control the attitude (four degrees of freedom) of suspended objects. Sensors for the position and pointing were built using electro-optical components. |
optical interferometer expert
optical resonator expert |
Expert has designed and analyzed resonators for lasers and other applications with an emphasis on superior optical and mechanical performance. He has also conducted analyses and modeling of systems processing polarized light (Jones matrix techniques). Projects include the redesign of a resonator for a large frame ion argon laser and design and construction of optical resonators for a variety of applications. |
light polarization expert
wave polarization expert |
Expert uses matrix analysis to describe optical polarization effects in complicated optical systems inside and outside optical resonators. He used polarization analysis to design a novel method of frequency selection for Nd:YAP lasers, to assess behavior of sapphire crystal inside optical resonators, and to study noise induced by electro-optic modulators.
actuator selection expert
sensor selection expert |
Expert has experience in analysis, specification, and selection of sensors and actuators for high precision servo systems. He has used high precision laser frequency stabilization and high precision control of attitude of suspended objects. |
vibration isolation expert |
Expert has designed, analyzed, and tested high performance vibration isolation systems used to protect sensitive displacement sensors from mechanical vibrations and acoustic noise. |
mechanical noise expert |
Expert is experienced in analysis, measurement, and characterization of a variety of noise contributions in mechanical, optical, and electronic systems with the goal of understanding the noise and improving system performance. His work includes the analysis of noise in a He-NE laser resulting in quieter operation. Expert has analyzed noise in optical interferometers to determine the fundamental sensitivity limits. Subsequent measurements of the noise and corrections to the system resulted in achieving the theoretically predicted performance. Additionally, he has analyzed noise in optical systems due to geometrical beam fluctuations (beam jitter). The results were used for the design of advanced interferometers with ultra-high displacement sensitivity.
outgassing expert
vacuum outgassing expert |
Expert measured and analyzed vacuum outgassing rates of materials and components. The measurements were used for the characterization of materials for use in vacuum, development of cleaning procedures to allow certain plastics to be used in an ultra-high vacuum environment, and development of a process for achieving low hydrogen outgassing rates from stainless steel.
control system expert |
Expert is knowledgeable of analysis, design, and implementation of various control systems including feedback, closed loop, and automatic control systems. Applications include measurement systems, attitude control, active vibration control, and laser frequency and power stabilization. His control system design experience extends to system architecture, meaning selection of sensors, actuators, and their relative placement in the system. |
