For the past 18 years, Expert's technical activities have centered on paper mill chemistry. This has included the bleaching and washing of pulp, save-all (flotation) processes, additives, water pretreatments, pitch, deposit problems, and waste effluent treatment. He has developed the first commercially available lab and on-line zeta potential instruments, based on the streaming potential principal. He did the pioneering work on the use of cationic fillers in papermaking, and was first to implement the selective and independent control of formation and retention and drainage.

Over the past 25 years, Expert has introduced five instruments that measure electrostatic charge to the paper industry, including the only successful on-line instrument. He has also introduced the only instrument to measure specific filtration resistance. Expert also developed the technology that enables the independent and selective control of retention and formation and drainage.
