Expert has over 45 years of experience and a world-wide reputation in the field of cryogenics. While engaged in cryogenic research at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Expert became adept at safely handling liquid nitrogen, liquid hydrogen, and liquid helium, as well as with the operation of liquefiers for these fluids. From his early years at Los Alamos on, he has provided assistance with the handling of cryogenic liquids and in the design of related equipment. Expert gained experience in the safe handling of large quantities of cryogenic fluids through his involvement in the Laboratory's nuclear rocket program where he designed, constructed, and operated large cryogenic systems. Based on his book, "Safety in the Handling of Cryogenic Fluids" published by Plenum Press in 1996, Expert has conducted training sessions in this area. Applications of his work include rocket filling systems, superconducting power transmission lines, and apparatus for testing low temperature properties of materials.

Expert has authored numerous publications, taught courses, and consulted extensively on cryogenic safety and the handling of cryogenic fluids. At the invitation of NASA, Expert participated in the investigation of the oxygen tank explosion in the Apollo 13 mission. He has written a book entitled "Safety in the Handling of Cryogenic Fluids" published by Plenum Press. Expert has developed a two-day course in the safety of handling hydrogen and cryogenic fluids (most recently given twice at the U.S. Air Force's Arnold Engineering Development Center).

Hydrogen has been an integral part of Expert's career. He assisted NASA by writing a NASA report covering the safety issues of handling slush hydrogen. He also served as a consultant to NASA in their experiments to investigate the dispersion of liquid hydrogen after spills of up to 5000 gallons. He has conducted experiments on hydrogen embrittlement and has served as a consultant for the Electric Power Research Institute in their experiments on the large-scale confined combustion of hydrogen-air mixtures.

The success of Expert's conversion of a pickup truck to liquid hydrogen fuel operation resulted in a joint program between the LANL, the Energy Institute of New Mexico, and the DLR (German air and space research establishment). Through this program, an automobile was successful converted to operation with liquid hydrogen and safely demonstrated for about 5000 miles. During this time period, Expert managed the Laboratory's program to study the safety and environmental control of hydrogen fuel.

Expert conducted studies on the production of ethanol from corn, the use of geothermal energy source of the Island of St. Lucia (West Indies) both to generate electricity and for other uses of the waste heat, and a similar study for the application of geothermal energy in Guatemala. Additionally, he participated in the study of the safety of the use of liquid methane as a railroad locomotive fuel.

Training/Seminars
Expert has been giving courses and lectures on the safety of handling hydrogen and/or cryogenic fluids (such as liquid hydrogen, helium, nitrogen, and oxygen) for over 15 years. The courses cover the hazards of the above fluids and methods to use them safely. For nine years, Expert has given a one-day lecture on the subject as part of a short course in Cryogenic Engineering given at UCLA. Additionally, Expert has offered two-day courses at the US Air Force Arnold Engineering Development Center at Tullahoma, TN and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He has given either one- or two-day courses at the Los Alamos National Laboratory on several occasions, and a one-day lecture at the Aerospace Corp.
