Expert's expertise lies in the area of heavy metal chemistry with an emphasis on solution behavior. His research in the last decade has been heavily involved with modelling by laboratory experiment of the environmental behavior of the actinide elements, including uranium and plutonium and with the chemistry of separation science of the f-elements. He was the co-discoverer of the element 101, mendelevium, in 1955. He has also worked with americium, curium, neptunium, thorium, berkelium, californium, einsteinium, fermium, lawrencium, and nobelium.
