Most of his research and teaching activities are in fluid mechanics, heat and mass transfer, and drying technology. His particular areas of research are drying of particles in vibrated, spouted, or agitated beds; steam drying; and drying of weblike materials. Another area of interest to him is impinging jet heat and mass transfer.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT DRYING; PAPER DRYING; SOLIDS DRYING. Expert is very familiar with worldwide activities in the area of solids drying. He participated in an international symposium on pulp and paper drying and is the Founder and Program Chairman of the Biennial International Drying Symposia (IDS) as well as editor of both the Drying Technology journal and a series of books entitled "Advances in Drying." He has also presented custom designed short courses or seminars for many companies internationally using the Handbook of Industrial Drying, which he edited (Marcel Dekker, N.Y.), as the text. Expert has assisted companies in the selection of novel dryers, in making improvements in existing dryers, and in energy savings efforts.

Expert is a Fellow of ASME, the Chemical Institute of Canada, and Senior Fellow of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. He is also a member of the Canadian Society of Chemical Engineers, AIChE, the Canadian Pulp & Paper Society, and an honorary professional fraternity.

In 1986, he received an award for Innovation in Drying. He is listed in American Men of Science, Who's Who in Engineering, Who's Who in America, and Who's Who in the East.
