Having taught about 30 PhD and 15 MS students, he has actively taught the ACS Short Courses in gas chromatography (25 years), high performance liquid chromatography (15 years), and gas chromatorgraphy/mass spectrometry (5 years). His focus is in Ultra Trace Analysis of organic compounds, often first by sample prep including SFE, SPE, microwave-assisted extraction of soil, water, urine, blood, food, and bomb residues. Target compounds are usually pesticides, toxic chemicals, PCB's, priority pollutants, biological weapons (nerve gases), and explosives. He is also knowledgeable of preparative liquid chromatography. |

In 1975 Expert shared an IR 100 award as coinventor of the CIRA GC/IR Instrument. In 1983 he received the VPI Alumni Teaching Award. In 1986 he received the Eastern Analytical Award in Chromatography in Latin America; he received the Eastern Analytical Award in Chromatography in 1989 and the Keene Dimick Award in Chromatography in 1991. In 1992 he received the Tsnett Metal in Chromatography from the Russian Academy of Sciences.
