FINITE ELEMENT MODELING; FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS SOFTWARE. Expert has built an internationally known research program in the area of automated adaptive finite element modeling. Research activities have focused on the development of techniques to reliably automate the finite element modeling process. His research in the area of fully automatic three-dimensional mesh generation has led to the development of new techniques. These techniques have recently been widely adopted by commercial finite element modeling software developers. Recently, he has also begun to investigate generalized adaptive techniques to support all analysis idealization steps. FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS. Over the years, Expert has been involved in the development of automated analysis techniques for a number of areas. These include manufacturing simulations, structural systems, thermomechanical modeling of electronic packaging, computational fluid dynamics, modeling of high performance composite materials, and modeling of biomechanical systems. Expert's current emphasis is on the development of techniques for heterogeneous material systems. AUTOMATED ADAPTIVE ANALYSIS ON PARALLEL COMPUTERS. Over the past few years, a focus of Expert's research has been on algorithms and associated software for the effective use of parallel computers in performing automated adaptive analysis. The key developments have related to methodologies to account for the evolving nature of adaptive discretizations in an efficient manner when the discretization is partitioned over a distributed memory parallel computer. COMPUTER AIDED ENGINEERING; ENGINEERING DESIGN AUTOMATION. Expert has had extensive experience in the area of computer aided engineering. This includes non-manifold geometric modeling, the application of knowledge-based techniques, and engineering design methodologies. He has also been heavily involved in the development of generalized techniques and standards to support the effective integration of computer-aided geometric design and automated engineering analysis.
