SYNTHETIC MEMBRANE FORMATION; HIGH-PERFORMANCE MEMBRANE DEVELOPMENT; MICROPOROUS MEMBRANE; POLYMER MEMBRANE. The majority of Expert's research deals with the development of microporous polymeric membranes and support materials of superior thermal stability and chemical resistance. He designs these membranes for applications such as membrane separations of process streams that exist at elevated temperatures and/or contain a high concentration of organic solvents (indeed, the stream may be organic rather than aqueous). These membranes are also designed for applications in air filtration, blood filtration, blood oxygenation, controlled release, removal of suspended solids, bacteria, algae, colloids, and coliforms from ambient aqueous streams, breathable surgical garments, battery separators, and both closed-cell and open-cell foams for thermal and sound insulators in demanding applications such as those encountered in the aerospace industry. THERMALLY INDUCED PHASE SEPARATION (TIPS). While a variety of processes are currently used to produce polymeric membranes, only the thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) process, which has been studied extensively in Expert's laboratory, is capable of producing the desired membranes. He uses TIPS for a variety of high-performance polymers and copolymers that are difficult to process and dissolve at room temperature and are therefore not amenable to the standard phase inversion process of membrane formation. Polymers studied in Expert's lab include isotactic polypropylene (Tm = 458 K), ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (Tm = 413 K), poly(vinylidene fluoride), (Tm = 442 K), poly(4-methyl-1-pentene), (Tm = 503 K), poly(2,6-dimenthyl-1,4-phenylene ether), (Tm = 535 K), poly(phenylene sulfide), (Tm = 558 K), poly(tetrafluoroethylene-co-perfluoropropylvinylether), (Tm = 583 K), poly(ether ether ketone), (Tm = 607 K), and various polysulfones and polyamides. He has prepared membranes from these and other materials with porosities as high as 85%, pore size distributions narrower than those available via traditional phase inversion techniques, and free from macro voids.
