He has developed a working program, entitled SYNGEN, which generates the best syntheses for any input compound and displays them in order of cost. ORGANIC REACTION DATABASE RETRIEVAL. Expert's expertise includes retrieving organic reactions from computer databases. He has written a computer program to search any commercial database for reactions based on his published collection of definitions/descriptions of all organic reactions. CODEINE AND MORPHINE SYNTHESIS. Expert's expertise includes codeine and morphine synthesis. He is developing a very short total synthesis for these alkaloids. ORGANIC CHEMICAL STRUCTURE. Expert has developed very efficient ways to draw and read organic structures in the computer. His innovations in this area also allow a computer user to store structures in a compact and rapidly searchable format. ORGANIC SYNTHESIS. Expert has spent his whole career in organic synthesis. He has worked in the laboratory, developing new methods and synthesizing natural products, and at the computer, developing the logic for designing syntheses and its realization in a practical program. TERPENE SYNTHESIS. Expert has done a number of terpene syntheses and has compared many others on the computer to develop a theory of optimal synthesis. Currently in the laboratory, he is developing a short synthesis of vitamin A.
