Most of Expert's scientific career has been devoted to the study of electric arcs, particularly high-current arcs, including the electrode regions. In addition, he generated many publications in the area.

Expert is well-versed in thermal plasmas characterized by strong gradients that render them inhomogeneous in terms of composition, temperatures, and velocities. He also has extensive modeling experience in thermal plasmas.

Expert is presently engaged in a research project on the rapidly expanding technology of wire arc spraying. Since he has many years of experience in arc technology and fluid dynamics (the foundation of plasma arc spraying), he considers his laboratory to be on the forefront of the field.

Expert's laboratory conducted extensive research on high-rate deposition of diamond films, superconducting films, and films of other ceramic materials. His expertise includes design and characterization of thermal plasma reactors for plasma CVD and the films it produces.

Expert is well-acquainted with the underlying physics involved in thermal plasma processing of materials. He teaches a full-academic year course on plasma technology, as well as many extension courses. These courses cover basic plasma physics, including atomic theory, kinetic theory, gaseous electronics, reactions in plasmas, thermodynamic functions, collision cross-sections, and transport properties.

Expert's expertise in this field is primarily in thermal plasma processing of materials, including plasma synthesis of fine powders , plasma CVD, plasma arc spraying, plasma spraying, and plasma sintering of ceramics. In addition, he has published over 100 papers and holds 4 patents in the field.

One of the major research activies of Expert's laboratory is the study of the fundamental processes in plasma spraying. He has a significant background in the diagnostics and modeling of plasma spray jets and the associated design of plasma spray torches. The latest addition to his laboratory's research capabilities is the evaluation of plasma sprayed coatings using sophisticated image analysis techniques.

Although Expert is involved in an NSF-funded engineering research center (ERC) with this title, his expertise is primarily in thermal plasma processing of materials, including plasma synthesis of fine powders, plasma CVD, plasma arc spraying, and other plasma processing techniques.

Over the past four years, Expert has devoted a substantial portion of his research efforts to the thermal plasma CVD of diamond films and their adhesion to various substrate materials.

Over the past five years, Expert has used a unique counterflow injection plasma system to determine high-destruction efficiencies of liquid toxic waste (PCBs).
