Expert is one of the best if not the top scientist in the country in the field of odor chemistry. His work started and has continued with his interest in activated carbon. He was the founding Chairman of ASTM Committee E-18 on Sensory Evaluation of Materials and Products, and is an honorary member of ASTM D-22 on Sampling and Analysis of Atmospheres. He was one of four researchers who first recommended the butanol odor scale, and chaired the Committee on Odors from Stationary and Mobile Sources for the National Academy of Sciences. He also devised what has become known as the Expert Diesel Odor Kit. He continues to consult for industry and government. He is very knowledgeable regarding odor thresholds.
