Expert is an expert in materials surface sciences, and is interested in the fundamental mechanisms, chemical physics and electronic processes in materials. His background includes physical chemistry, surface science, surface physics, vacuum science, and materials science. Expert has studied physisorption and chemisorption of gases on metals and semiconductors by using surface analysis techniques, resulting in over 100 publications over the past 20 years. This work has concentrated on the kinetics and thermodynamics of chemisorbed species, the electronic and structural aspects of adsorbates, and surface reconstruction and relaxation. He also applies this knowledge to problems in catalysis (heterogeneous and multicomponent), corrosion of metals, thin film deposition (vapor, vacuum, ion implantation, sputter, and evaporated films), thin films (optical properties and dielectric films), and electronic structure. He has published many papers on ion implantation. He utilizes many spectroscopy techniques, including X-ray photoelectron, UV photoemission, Auger, ion scattering, and optical, to study these material surfaces. He also consults for chemical companies, oil companies and the semiconductor industry.

Expert has recently become very familiar with diamond films. He has used low-energy carbon ion beams to deposit thin films that have a diamond structure. These films are bonded to the substrate surface by means of carbine chemical bonds. Such films have been prepared on substrates of silicon, nickel, tungsten, tantalum and gold. The films are electrically insulating, have high heat conductivity, are optically-transparent, can be doped to form semiconductors, and are heat-resistant.

Expert has been an active researcher in this area since 1972. His work has included studies of gas phase and solid-phase materials, and has resulted in more than 100 publications. His experience has also included building and using the spectrometers, and developing some of the theoretical and interpretative methodology. He has written one book in the area.
Expert has worked in this area since 1979, and his emphasis has been on designing and building time-of-flight scattering and recoiling spectrometers that have been used for surface structure analysis. Interatomic spacings in surfaces can be determined to an accuracy of 0.1A, including light atoms such as hydrogen. Ion scattering spectrometry has been his main focus for the past 20 years.
Expert has designed and constructed six ultrahigh vacuum spectrometer systems over the past 20 years. He has a thorough knowledge of pumps, vacuum welding, vacuum-compatible materials, and vacuum measurements. He has experience with high- and low-temperature vacuum seals.
Expert' research group has developed a new deposition technique that uses low-energy mass selected ion beams to directly deposit thin films. His group has designed an instrument for this, advantageous because films can be deposited at low temperatures, isotopic purity is possible, deposition is under clean UHV conditions, and there is good control over the stoichiometry for compound films.
For the past 15 years, much of Expert' research group work has been in the sputtering of surfaces by energetic ions, sputtering yields, selective sputtering, reactive ion etching, ion-surface electronic change exchange, scattered and sputtered ion fractions, and chemical sputtering.
Expert' Ph.D. research was in UV and visible absorption and emission spectroscopy, and he is very knowledgeable in molecular and atomic absorption, emission spectroscopy, flourescence, and phosphorescence. He has also worked in ion-induced photon emission from surfaces. His Ph.D. dissertation was about fluorescence and phosphoresence spectroscopy, and molecular luminescence.

Expert has studied adsorption and chemisorption of gases on metal, semiconductor, and compound surfaces. Experimentally, he has used several surface analysis techniques to determine the adsorbate coverages and site positions on these surfaces.
Expert is an expert in X-ray and UV photoelectron spectroscopy. He has applied it to studies of many different types of materials and has consulted with industries on its application to their problems.
Expert does film deposition using low-energy ion beams, different from molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) or implantation.
Expert has experience in various analytical techniques, such as x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Auger electron spectroscopy, secondary ion mass spectrometry, ion scattering spectrometry, mass spectrometry, low energy electron diffraction, optical absorption and emission spectroscopy, and infrared spectroscopy. He has published papers that have used these techniques for analysis.
