Summary of Expertise:

Expert has expertise in the practical, minimum theory, "hardware oriented" aspects of vibration. As founder and president of a private engineering school (1962-90), he taught thousands of engineers and technicians how to measure and analyze vibration and shock and calibrate instruments. Some students use vibration as a diagnostic tool; for example, to detect bad bearings in machines. He has worked on vibration control problems associated with all types of products, from automobiles, ships, and aircraft to disk drives and electronic components. He assists automotive and other suppliers in understanding applicable international and proprietary vibration and noise standards.
Expert maintains that nearly all vibration-induced
mechanical failures are caused by resonance, by one or more "forcing frequencies" coinciding with
one or more "natural frequencies." Much of his consulting is directed toward assisting clients in
recognizing resonance problems in their hardware, before or after failures occur. This usually
requires measurements and analysis, with which he sometimes assists.
Expert assists clients in selecting sensors, analyzers, and readout instruments. He helps locate and mount sensors, route cabling, acquire data, process data into optimum formats, and interpret that data. For 20 years Expert taught numerous courses on automotive vibration testing, measurement, analysis, and calibration for a variety of automotive manufacturers and suppliers.
An increasingly recognized form of vibration is non-repetitive, unpredictable in detail, or "random." Expert is jokingly called "Mr. Random Vibration" because of his many years of teaching, consulting, and authorship of texts and papers presented at symposia. He assists his clients in recognizing random vibration, measuring it, analyzing it in the time and frequency domains, and reproducing it on
shakers (simulation). He is also adept in electronic equipment random vibration.
Environmental stress screening (ESS) has become widely accepted as a tool to achieve higher product reliability. Expert helps in selecting ESS equipment (pneumatic multi-axis vs. electrodynamic one or two-axis shakers, for example, also LN2 vs. mechanical refrigeration) and launching ESS operations. Newcomers often question the power spectral density units of g2/Hz. Extensions to ESS practice include HASS, HALT, and STRIFE.
Expert assists clients in selecting sensors and systems for measuring the shocks of handling, transport, and service. He helps clients select and use analyzers to quantify shocks as to their potential for damage. He also helps clients calibrate this equipment. Expert assists clients in reproducing (simulating) shocks in environmental test laboratories. He helps clients design their products to better withstand shocks. He
assists suppliers to better understand international standards related to shocks.
Expert assists clients in setting up mechanical, electrohydraulic (servohydraulic) or electrodynamic (electromagnetic) or piezoelectric shaker systems for vibration testing. Often the goal is to simulate handling, transport, or in-service
vibration environments.
As automobile interiors become quieter, "small" noises, collectively called "buzzes, squeaks and rattles" (BSR) are noticed. These elicit many complaints from new car buyers. Automakers are pressing their suppliers (instrument panels, seats, doors,
passenger restraints, etc.) for quieter products, and Expert assists in meeting noise targets.
Expert helps clients in achieving higher reliability in two ways: 1) during development of a new
product by conducting environmental tests, and 2) during production, by conducting environmental
stress screening (ESS). He uses this knowledge in electronic, medical, automotive, and other device
reliability testing.
