Quick notes on the advanced search

  • Stemming extends a search to cover grammatical variations on a word. For example, a search for fish would also find fishing. A search for applied would also find applying, applies, and apply.
  • Phonic searching looks for a word that sounds like the word you searching for and begins with the same letter. For example, a phonic search for Smith will also find Smithe and Smythe.
  • Fuzzy searching will find a word even if it is misspelled. For example, a fuzzy or apple will find appple.
  • If you type in a phrase like 'alkane chemistry', you will get back only items that have that exact phrase.
  • You can make a query like 'alkane and chemistry' to get back all items that contain both words in any order in the text.
  • You can also do 'alkane or chemistry' if you want items with one or the other of the words.
  • Also, you can try 'alkane w/10 chemistry' to return items that have the words within 10 words of each other. The 'and', 'or', 'w/#' items can all be combined for complex queries. Be sure to use '(' and ')' to set the precidence if you use more than one operator.
